Pie: an old Brown Horse is a wonderful five star read, I must explain that my experience with horses is far from vast; limited to a few lessons in my 40s to keep up with my son. PIE however has made me fall in love with so many aspects of the equine world.As so many I watch the Triple Crown races and of course Ascot, because it is fun and the horses so majestic, in this book the author brings the equine home to a loving, sharing aspect of what a wide variety of these wonderful creatures have to offer.
I fell in love with the storyline, Pie and with the Keeper. The idea that we can all re-create ourselves and that second chances are real is a beautiful theme throughout the story that will give every reader hope.
It is a unique book, the kind of book you read a few times. It can be read by anyone, any age and it will tug at your heartstrings, make you laugh and give you hope. It transcends so much more than Pie’s story.

I normally do not read books about animals and I have certainly never read a book written by a horse, but I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading Pie's narrative. He is an excellent storyteller and I was hooked from the beginning. I highly recommend this book and I hope he writes a sequel!

This book is a very good read for all. The story being told in the perspective of the horse gives you a look into these large beautiful creatures lives and how they interact with their human counterparts. Excellent book!!!
In the old fashioned style of the classic Black Beauty, this story unfolds from a horse-eye-perspective. Pie is a skilled cattle horse who survives near death injuries while corralling a bull. He finds himself discarded by the cowboys that have been the corner stones of his world to be stabled and sold. However, this is by no means the end of his story but rather the beginning as he finds his human to love and continues to have amazing adventures.
The book moves at a good pace and is broken into many little horse tales. I say Bravo for Kandy Kay Scaramuzzo at capturing the mind of the horse perfectly.
This story touched my heart and I think that horse and animal lovers everywhere would enjoy the read.
Although I’ve never considered myself a "horse person," Pie, proved to be one of the most enjoyable and easily read books I’ve experienced. I treasure a tale with a natural flow and Kandy Kay Scaramuzzo does this expertly. I think you’ll agree that to hear Pie, a remarkable and memorable horse, tell his story in his own words is a unique treat. Enjoy. I’m sure you will.
I loved this story, perfect for the young and young at heart. The author clearly has a deep love and knowledge of the behavior of horses, and pens a story from the horses view that comes across as both perfectly normal and wonderfully captivating at the same time. I'm getting an extra copy for my daughter, as I'm not going to give this one up. LB Johnson
Pie was a cattle-herding horse who worked until the ripe old age of twenty-five. Then he had a run-in with a bull which left him permanently injured, unable to work on the ranch. The rest of his years were spent as a therapy horse. Pie, An Old Brown Horse, is the story of Pie's latter life. It is told from his point of view. Readers are introduced to many of the horses and barn animals Pie met during that time. Basically, the story is the horse's memoir.
Pie is certainly a remarkable horse. I felt however, that the book needed more of a plot with a conflict, climax, and resolution. I also felt it needed some editing. Still, horse lovers will enjoy reading it and viewing the black and white horse photos the author has provided.
